Tim Grover builds NBA legends. Among his clients are three of the best basketball players to ever set foot on the court—Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade.
Over the past eight years, STACK has had the opportunity to work with Grover on many projects, so we know firsthand how influential he is within the world of basketball performance training.
I recall watching Grover take Dwyane Wade through a grueling on-court drill session and weight room workout in 2009. As I stood courtside at Grover's facility, ATTACK Athletics, I was amazed at the interaction, or lack thereof, between the two men. The entire extent of their communication consisted of a few quick glances, subtle gestures and single-word commands. Nevertheless, Wade knew exactly what to do during every second of his highly programmed workout. I quickly realized that these guys were operating on a completely different level, one that clearly works for Grover and his superstar clients.
Based on that experience and other interactions with Grover, I considered his newly released book, Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable, a must-read.
Throughout Relentless, Grover calls upon his decades of experience working with the world's most elite athletes to dissect what it takes not just to succeed, but to be the absolute best. He relates previously untold stories about his time with MJ, Kobe and Wade to drive home his points and explain how these legends were able to harness their 'raw animal instinct.'
Relentless sets forth Grover's belief that there are three types of competitors—Coolers, Closers and Cleaners, 'whose competitive focus and passion are, respectively, good, great and unstoppable.' Cleaners are defined as the most intense and driven competitors imaginable. According to Grover, a Cleaner's attitude can be summed up in the three words, 'I own this.'
Grover provides a list of traits that define a Cleaner and challenges readers to use it to determine their level of competitiveness and focus. He discusses a total of thirteen traits to remind us that there is no such thing as luck. 'There are circumstances and outcomes, and you can control both if you desire,' he writes.
He labels each trait as #1, because on his list, everything is equally important. Nothing should be skipped or glossed over.

In Tim’s book he outlines 13 things that people who are extremely successful in their careers do. He describes their mindset and work ethic and how those two areas make them unstoppable. Below I will outline what the differences are between the good, the great, and the unstoppable, or as the author would call it, Relentless people. After describing this I will then give you the 13 ways Relentless people think and act. These are the actions that make them relentless.
A cooler is careful, waits to be told what to do, watches to see what everyone else is doing, and then follows the leader. They are mediators, not decision makers, unless they are forced to make a decision. They handle a certain amount of pressure when things are going well, but when things get too intense, they kick the problem over to someone else. They can make plays, but they are not responsible for the outcome. They are setup people.
A closer can handle a lot of pressure and get the job done. Put in the right situation and tell them what to do and they will do it. They seek attention and credit, and they are aware of what everyone else is doing and what others think of them. They love the rewards and perks associated with their fame and would choose financial security over winning or success. The closer is the ultimate competitor, the guy/gal that you can always count on to finish out the game or make the deal when necessary. The closer does what they are supposed to do, gets the credit, and goes home a happy hero.
A Cleaner: Means never being satisfied. It means creating new goals every time you reach your personal best. If you’re good, it means you don’t stop until you’re great. If you’re great, it means you fight until you’re unstoppable.

The motives and fuels of cleaners are the relentless craving of self-performance, obsession of the results and the dark side.
Dark Side
A dark side is that side you refuses to be taught to be good. Everyone has it. Losers are manipulated by it, average individuals try to inhibit it while only the cleaners can control it and make the best use of it. Dark side is a very powerful source of energy.
It is very difficult to control the dark side. Examples include anger, money, power, sex, and other tempting desires. Every coin has two sides. It all hinges on whether you can control it.
Tiger Woods (one of the best golfers), and Bill Clinton (former USA president) are two great examples of the ones using the power of dark side. The power of sex drives them to perform better. Their performance, however, fade when their scandals are disclosed. Dark side should only be kept in darkness. Otherwise, it will lose its powers.
